Walk Description

Stage 1

There is a car park in Auchtermuchty just south of the A91 near where it meets the B936. From here head west (left) along the A91 for a short distance before turning right up High Street. Pass the war memorial and clock tower and keep following the road (High St) as it bends left at the top to pass the library and then Post Office. Shortly after fork right onto Leckiebank Road.

Stage 2

This lane soon heads into open countryside with views across to East and West Lomond. Continue ahead uphill where a lane to the right leads to Baincraig. At the next track on the right, well before the buildings at Leckiebank are reached, turn right to go through the gate and follow the track with the stone wall on your left. When a burn is reached with a metal shed on the far side turn left to follow a path by the burn. Further on the path crosses the burn and continues up the edge of the field heading towards the cottages.

Stage 3

At the lane turn right and follow this with the large house at Newton visible ahead. When the road is reached turn left and head uphill until the Forestry Commission car park for Pitmedden is reached. Turn right through the car park and continue beyond a gate onto a wide path which sticks near the edge of the wood. Ignore a signed path to the right and keep right at a fork to continue ahead, going around a gate and curving left near a house on the right to reach the road.

Stage 4

Turn right at the road and bear right after a bridge ignoring the road to Pitmedden and Raemore Farms. Soon the road reaches the B936 at Filter House. Turn left along the road for a short distance before a path on the left (signed Auchtermuchty Common) provides a pleasant alternative as it follows a burn. Eventually steps lead back up to the road, cross and head directly across the car park for Auchtermuchty Common - there is an information board here.

Stage 5

Stay on the main track soon leading to a gate with a bench immediately after (signed for Auchtermuchty) and follows a green lane between stone walls with good countryside views. Keep ahead on the main track as it descends towards the village soon passing the houses at Pleasance before the outskirts of Auchtermuchty are reached. Continue ahead to reach the B936 where you turn left to follow the road back down to the car park at the bottom. On the way you can follow the sign to visit the statue of accordianist Jimmy Shand.
